Our residents have high academic standards and expectations while being supported through a caring and personal learning environment. Residents are expected to play an active role in shaping their own education. We work hard to offer flexibility so residents can pursue their individual learning goals. Residents work closely with faculty, which enables frequent feedback and coaching.
Our residents serve on residency program work groups and committees in the hospital and the community. Involvement in these components is critical, because the voice of our residents aids decisions about our residency program and the future of pediatrics.
Core curriculum by residency year
Our curriculum is divided into two components: the core or required curriculum, and the individualized curriculum. There is some overlap between the two components because we believe that the core curriculum should be tailored to meet the distinct learning needs of each resident. For example, while residents are required to do seven specialty rotations, the choice of which rotations to do depends on the learning needs and career plans of each resident.
In our new X+Y schedule model, core and elective educational experiences are in 3-week blocks followed by a 1-week ambulatory experience. Sample individual schedules and ambulatory week schedules are shared below. Each resident has three weeks of vacation, two during ambulatory weeks and one out of elective time.
