Patient care facilities at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center include a 396-bed general hospital and extensive outpatient clinics, providing primary, secondary, and tertiary health care to residents of northern New England. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is one of the few medical schools and tertiary medical centers in our country located in a truly rural setting.
Construction on a 212,000-square-foot, five-story new Patient Pavilion at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, began in July 2020 and opened in spring 2023.
Dartmouth Health Children's facilities
- In 1991, the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center moved to its current facility, a 225-acre complex situated on a wooded hillside in Lebanon, NH. A six-story outpatient building, operating rooms, general inpatient units, intensive care units, the Dartmouth Cancer Center, other facilities, and support services exist on the campus.
- In 1992, Dartmouth Health Children's was accredited by the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions as a children's hospital within a hospital.
While Dartmouth Health Children's functions as a pediatric outpatient practice and a "community" hospital to families in the Dartmouth area, it is also the only tertiary and academic children's medical facility in New Hampshire.
We serve a population base of nearly two million in New Hampshire and eastern Vermont. Despite our location adjacent to a classic New England college town, our patient population, drawn from both states, includes socioeconomic diversity. With this diversity comes a wide range of social stressors and care needs.
Pediatric Adolescent Inpatient Unit and Intensive Care Unit
The 21-bed inpatient unit and PICU affords maximum flexibility to accommodate the needs of our pediatric patients, and allows residents on both the Ward and PICU team to care for patients at varying levels of acuity.
Intensive Care and Newborn Nurseries
The intensive Care Nursery (ISN) is a 30-bed tertiary intensive care unit for newborns, the only unit of its kind in New Hampshire. There are approximately 1,200 deliveries annually with about 400 admissions to the ICN.
Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Clinic
The ambulatory clinic of Dartmouth Health Children's is located on the top floor of the Faulkner Outpatient Building. It includes examination rooms and outpatient facilities for primary care and all pediatric medical and surgical specialties. Laboratory and radiology services are available in the outpatient building.
The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) consists of 23 beds, including three pediatric treatment rooms and a pediatric waiting area. Approximately 4,000 infants, children, and adolescents under 19 years of age receive care for acute illnesses and injuries in the ED each year.
