Approximately 4,000 infants, children, and adolescents under 19 years of age receive care for acute illnesses and injuries in the Emergency Department (ED) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center each year.
Pediatric residents spend two blocks working in the ED during the second and third years of training. During these blocks, pediatric residents are supervised by Emergency Medicine faculty, including Pediatric Emergency Medicine trained physicians. Residents work closely with the ED nursing staff, as well as subspecialty consultants.
Pediatric residents receive significant additional experience by providing pediatric coverage for the ED when they are the admitting residents on the inpatient service, particularly during the Night Shift blocks.
