  • Firearm injuries leading cause of death: Firearms are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 17 in the U.S., with suicide by firearm also a significant cause.
  • Safe firearm storage: It is critical to keep firearms unloaded, locked, and out of sight to prevent accidental injury, especially in homes with children.
  • Education for older children: Older children should be taught about the dangers of firearms, including what to do if they encounter a firearm in someone else’s home, and whom to talk to if they feel unsafe.
  • Dispel media myths: Children often have misconceptions based on video games or media; it is important to help them understand the real, serious consequences of firearm use.
  • Availability of support: Families may access resources such as gun locks to improve firearm safety in the home.
