We support the academic needs of hospitalized children. The Pencil Partners Tutoring Program provides educational support and learning opportunities for children and adolescents while staying at the hospital.
Our inpatients are both acutely and chronically ill, with a variable length of stay, from less than 24 hours to more than two weeks. Although this may seem like a short time, it can be a defining moment for a child and their family. It is important for children to maintain normal routines and expectations, especially during times of stress, like hospitalization.
Normalcy helps children and adolescents feel safe, increases positive coping, and enhances success both in and out of the hospital. Our program integrates tutoring during the hospital stay.
Tutors help children complete assignments or have an opportunity for fun and learning while adapting and individualizing their approach based on a child's interests and ability. This is an opportunity for tutors to experience teaching children in a setting that is non-traditional, as they expand their skills and creativity in teaching practices.
Hours
Our program operates Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Our tutors are trained hospital volunteers, who are currently or have been teachers. They bring a variety of skills and compassion to the program. Tutors can also stretch their skills and creativity by adapting and creating for the individual child.
Please notify your Child Life Specialist if your child is interested in participating during an inpatient admission.
