Statement from Dartmouth Health, Dartmouth Health Children's on reported link between Tylenol use in pregnancy and autism

Graphic that reads "Media Statement: Autism/Tylenol Safety for Pregnant Women"

On Monday, September 22, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that public health experts in his administration had found a link between women taking the pain reliever and fever reducer acetaminophen—better known in the U.S. by the brand name Tylenol—during pregnancy, and children developing autism. Tylenol has been recommended for years to women for pain and fever management during pregnancy, as it is safe for the developing fetus. This is in contrast to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) that carry fetal risk.

The highest quality studies have failed to conclude that taking Tylenol at any stage of pregnancy causes autism, or any other form of neurodiversity or intellectual disability. The president’s announcement did not reference any new research that would change these findings. Oversimplifying the causes of autism or recommending unfounded treatments is harmful to impacted families.

Fever is a serious risk to the health of mother and baby, and Tylenol is a safe, effective drug for reducing fever and mitigating potentially tragic outcomes. Providers in maternal fetal medicine at Dartmouth Health, and in pediatrics at Dartmouth Health Children’s, will continue to recommend the use of Tylenol as needed to pregnant women as the safest available over-the-counter option for reducing pain and fever.

We will continue to follow guidance and recommendations from our professional organizations; the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
