- Two key healthy functions of anxiety:
- Warning of danger – alerts us to threats (e.g., fear of a tiger keeps us safe).
- Preparing for action – motivates preparation for challenges (e.g., studying for a test).
- Anxiety becomes unhealthy when:
- It is overly time-consuming, causing kids to dwell on worries instead of living life.
- It leads to avoidance of activities children want or need to do (e.g., skipping sports, refusing school).
- Important distinction:
- Anxiety symptoms ≠ anxiety disorder. Mild symptoms are common and can be managed.
- Anxiety disorders are more severe, stable over time, and require treatment.
- Parents should see anxiety as both unavoidable and useful, but also learn to recognize when it crosses into dysfunction.
When Anxiety Becomes a Problem for Kids
Anxiety is a normal and essential part of child development, playing a healthy role in growth and functioning.
