When Anxiety Becomes a Problem for Kids

Anxiety is a normal and essential part of child development, playing a healthy role in growth and functioning.

  • Two key healthy functions of anxiety:
    • Warning of danger – alerts us to threats (e.g., fear of a tiger keeps us safe).
    • Preparing for action – motivates preparation for challenges (e.g., studying for a test).
  • Anxiety becomes unhealthy when:
    • It is overly time-consuming, causing kids to dwell on worries instead of living life.
    • It leads to avoidance of activities children want or need to do (e.g., skipping sports, refusing school).
  • Important distinction:
    • Anxiety symptoms ≠ anxiety disorder. Mild symptoms are common and can be managed.
    • Anxiety disorders are more severe, stable over time, and require treatment.
  • Parents should see anxiety as both unavoidable and useful, but also learn to recognize when it crosses into dysfunction.
