How to Fit a Life Jacket

A snug, Coast Guard approved life jacket keeps children safest in and around the water.

  • Use a Coast Guard approved life jacket for child water safety; do not rely on floaties or water wings.
  • The life jacket should fit snugly; straps need to be tightened so that the child’s body changes (like after eating) might require loosening.
  • A fit check involves lifting the life jacket, if it touches the child’s ears, it is too loose and must be tightened further.
  • It is advisable to have children wear life jackets not only in the water but also on shore or riverbanks for safety.
