We at Dartmouth Health Children’s are disappointed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) unprecedented move to reduce the number of vaccines routinely recommended for children. The revised schedule now includes only 11 of the 17 previously recommended vaccines. The vaccines removed from the list prevent or reduce the severity of several serious diseases, including RSV, rotavirus, hepatitis A and B, meningitis and seasonal flu. There is no evidence suggesting harms from the previous CDC-recommended 2024 vaccine schedule, which continues to be endorsed and published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). This schedule is grounded in rigorous science and the expertise of immunologists, infectious disease specialists, and public health professionals.
Along with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services and Vermont Department of Health, Dartmouth Health Children’s will continue to recommend the AAP endorsed schedule as the foundation of our preventative care approach. We encourage parents and caregivers to speak directly with their child’s pediatrician to review current recommendations to make informed decisions about protecting their children against vaccine-preventable diseases.
